How to Add a Header to a PDF (Document Title, Section, Author, Logo)

Add a clean, repeating header to every page of a PDF without re-exporting the source document.

4 min readAdd a header

Your finished PDF needs the document title and your firm's logo at the top of every page. The source file is a Pages export, the original author has moved on, and you don't want to touch the layout.

Headers go on top — same as footers, mirror image. The setup is identical, the discipline slightly different.

Decide what the header actually says

Two common patterns. Editorial: document title on the left, section name on the right. Branded: logo on the left, document reference on the right.

Don't try to do both. A crowded header competes with the page content and makes the document feel busy. Pick one role for it — branding or navigation — and commit.

Stamp it across the document

Open the file in Flint's editor, add a text block (or image, for a logo) at the top of the page, and apply it to the page range. Leave about 1.5 cm between the header and the first line of body text.

For a logo, use a transparent PNG and keep the height to about 15-20px. Big logos in headers look like trade-show signage — keep it understated.

Handle the cover page

The cover almost never wants a header. Exclude page 1 from the stamping range, or skip the first 2 pages if the title page is followed by a divider.

If you don't have a cover yet, you can merge one onto the front afterwards. The header will start from whichever page you specify, regardless of what gets added to the front later.

Test alignment in spread view

Headers are easiest to judge in two-page spread view. The left and right pages should mirror each other cleanly. If the header text on even pages drifts down a few pixels, you've got a layout bug — re-apply and check.

For printed booklets, also test that the inside margin doesn't swallow the header. Add an extra 5-10mm to the inside margin if it's tight.

FAQ

Can a header include a logo?

Yes. Add the logo as an image header element. Keep it small — about 30-40px tall — and use a transparent PNG so the logo edges don't sit on a white block.

How do I show the section name as the header?

Apply different headers to different page ranges. Pages 1-20 might read "Section 1: Overview" and pages 21-40 "Section 2: Methodology". Apply once per range.

Will the header collide with my existing top content?

If the document was exported with its own headers already, you'll get overlap. Either crop the top margin or re-export the source with no header so Flint's stamp doesn't double up.

Should I match the header font to my body text?

Yes, usually. A header in a different font reads as added on. Match the document's typeface and use a smaller size — 8 or 9pt.

Headers carry your document's identity at the top of every page. Open the file in the editor and add yours — logo, title, or both — in under a minute.
