Why does Excel to PDF cut off columns? Fit it all on the page

Wide Excel sheets need page-fit settings or landscape orientation. Set before export.

You exported the Excel sheet to PDF. The leftmost columns are there. The rightmost columns disappeared off the edge of the page.

What's actually going wrong

Excel sheets are arbitrarily wide. PDF pages are fixed width. Excel's default PDF export uses your sheet's print area, and if the sheet is wider than the page, columns spill off.

Without page-fit settings, columns either get cut or split across multiple pages awkwardly.

The quick fix

Before exporting, set Excel's print scaling to 'Fit Sheet on One Page' or 'Fit All Columns on One Page'. In Page Setup > Scaling, choose 'Fit to 1 page wide by X tall' (leave height auto). The sheet scales down to fit width.

Alternatively, switch to landscape orientation (Page Setup > Orientation > Landscape) — wider page accommodates more columns at readable size.

For cleanest output, convert Excel to PDF in Flint which detects oversized sheets and applies fit settings automatically.

If that didn't work

If 'fit to page' shrinks text to unreadable size, the sheet is too wide for a single page. Split into multiple sheets, or use landscape with fit-to-page-wide.

For very wide datasets, consider Excel as the distribution format rather than PDF. Recipients with Excel can scroll; PDF readers can't.

Prevent it next time

Set print preview before export. Verify the layout looks right. Use 'Fit to page' as default for wide sheets. And design spreadsheets with PDF distribution in mind — keep critical columns near the left edge.

FAQ

Can I make Excel export PDF in landscape automatically?

Set orientation to landscape in Page Setup, then save. Future exports use that orientation.

Why is my Excel PDF showing only the left columns?

Sheet is wider than the page and fit-to-page isn't enabled. Set print scaling to 'Fit Sheet on One Page' before exporting.

Can I export only specific columns to PDF?

Set a print area covering only the columns you want. Page Layout > Print Area > Set Print Area. Then export.

Does Flint's converter handle wide sheets better?

Yes — Flint auto-detects oversized sheets and applies appropriate fit settings, reducing the chance of cut-off columns.
