Why can't I copy text from this PDF?

Three reasons text won't copy from a PDF, plus how to fix each one.

You highlight a paragraph in a PDF, hit copy, paste into an email — and get nothing, or worse, a string of nonsense. Frustrating, but the cause is almost always one of three things.

It's a scan, not real text

Most 'won't copy' PDFs are actually scanned images. There's no text in the file — just pictures of text. You need OCR to convert those pictures into selectable words. Open the file in Flint, run OCR, and the text becomes copyable. OCR isn't perfect on bad scans (faint print, skewed pages), but for clean documents it's accurate enough that most paragraphs need no clean-up.

Copy is disabled by permissions

Even when the text is real, the sender may have locked copying. You can read but not extract. If it's your document and you've lost the password, unlock PDF handles it. If it isn't yours, ask the sender for the text or an unlocked copy rather than working around the restriction.

Weird encoding garbles the paste

Sometimes copy works but you paste gibberish — Cyrillic where English should be, or 'Æ' where 'A' should be. This is a font-encoding issue: the PDF embedded a custom mapping that only its viewer understands. Workarounds: run OCR over the page anyway (it ignores the encoding), or paste into a different app to see if the encoding survives the trip.

FAQ

How do I know if it's a scan?

Zoom in to 400%. If the letters get pixellated and rough, it's an image. If they stay sharp and crisp, it's real text. Another tell: try to drag-select. Selection that snaps to whole pages rather than words means image.

Does OCR work on handwriting?

Modern OCR handles neat printing reasonably well but struggles with cursive or messy script. For business documents and printed forms, results are usually good. For diary pages or doctor's notes, expect to manually correct a lot.

Will OCR change how the PDF looks?

No — OCR adds an invisible text layer underneath the existing image. The page still looks the same; you just gain the ability to select and search the words.

If text won't copy, it's almost always a scan. Open in Flint, run OCR, and paste away.
