Split PDF by page orientation

Mixed-orientation PDFs split into a portrait file and a landscape file, in case you want them separate for printing or distribution.

Your report has 30 portrait pages of text and 8 landscape pages of charts. You want them as two files — one for the text section, one for the charts — because the chart printer is set up for landscape paper.

Flint can split by orientation in one pass.

How orientation split works

Open split PDF, drop the file, choose 'split by orientation'. Flint walks every page, reads its rotation hint, and routes portrait pages into one output, landscape into another. The two files keep the original page order within each orientation.

When you'd want this

Printers that need different paper orientation per job. Layouts that combine reports with appendix charts. Splitting a mixed file means you can hand the charts to a different system without worrying about portrait/landscape page handling.

Don't split if you don't need to

Most modern printers handle mixed-orientation PDFs fine — each page prints in its own orientation. If you're sending to a single capable printer or to a digital viewer, leave the file mixed. Splitting is for when downstream systems can't handle the mix.

Rotating instead of splitting

If your landscape pages are actually portrait pages that got rotated wrong, rotate PDF pages on those pages is the fix — not splitting. Inspect the content: if rotating 90° makes the page read correctly, it was wrongly rotated. If rotating breaks the layout, the page is intentionally landscape.

FAQ

What about pages that are square?

Flint treats them as portrait by default. Toggle to route them with landscape if your case needs it.

Does orientation depend on page size?

Orientation is about which dimension is longer. A landscape page is wider than tall.

Can I merge them back later?

Yes. Merge PDF keeps each page's rotation when combining.

What if rotation is wrong on all landscape pages?

Rotate them as a group with rotate PDF pages before deciding whether to split.

Portrait one way, landscape the other. Split by orientation.
