Reorder PDF by chapter

Chapter-level reordering — move whole chapters in one drag, with bookmark-aware boundaries.

Your draft put the methodology chapter before the introduction. Reviewer wants introduction first, then literature review, then methodology. Three chapter swaps, but each chapter is 20-30 pages.

Moving whole chapters is faster with bookmark-aware selection. Flint handles it.

Identify chapter ranges via bookmarks

Open reorder PDF. If your PDF has chapter bookmarks, Flint shows them alongside the thumbnail grid. Click a bookmark to select all pages in that chapter (from its start to the start of the next). Now you have a clean chapter selection ready to drag.

Drag chapters as units

With a chapter selected, drag the selection to its new position. All pages move together, preserving their internal order. The 30 pages of 'Methodology' end up where 'Introduction' used to be. Save.

Without bookmarks: use ranges

If your PDF lacks bookmarks, find chapter starts manually (open in a reader, note page numbers), then range-select in Flint. '11-32' selects pages 11-32 as a chapter. Drag that range to its new position. Slower than bookmark-based, but works.

Update bookmarks after reordering

Bookmarks track their target pages, so the 'Methodology' bookmark still points at the methodology pages wherever they end up. But the bookmark tree order in the outline sidebar may now be inconsistent (Methodology bookmark appears before Introduction bookmark because pages were reordered). Use edit PDF to reorder the bookmark tree to match.

FAQ

What if chapters overlap?

Bookmarks should mark non-overlapping chapter boundaries. If yours overlap, fix the bookmark structure first via edit PDF.

Will chapter-internal links break?

Links within a chapter remap correctly because the chapter moves as a unit.

What about figure references like 'see Figure 3.2'?

Text references don't auto-update. If you renumber chapters, find-and-replace in the source document and re-export the PDF.

Can I split chapters into separate files instead?

Yes — split by bookmarks gives you per-chapter PDFs.

Bookmark-aware chapter moves. Reorder by chapter.
