Merge multiple scanned pages into one PDF

When the scanner saves each page as its own file, here's how to combine them into one ordered, properly rotated PDF.

Your office scanner just dropped 30 files on the network share — page1.pdf, page2.pdf, all the way through page30.pdf. The settings to scan-to-multipage are buried three menus deep and you don't have time to find them.

Merging 30 single-page PDFs into one document is a five-second job in Flint. Here's the flow.

Drop the whole folder in

Open merge PDF, select all 30 files in Finder or File Explorer, and drag them onto the page in one go. Flint reads them in filename order by default, which usually matches scan order — page1, page2, page3. If the scanner used a weird naming scheme, you'll need to reorder, but most save with zero-padded numbers that sort correctly.

Fix sideways pages before merging

Scanners sometimes rotate pages strangely if the document loader feeds them at an angle. Spot any thumbnails that look sideways or upside-down? Click the rotate icon on that card before merging. Or do the merge first and use rotate PDF pages on the combined file — both work, but fixing individually is faster if only one or two pages are wrong.

Remove duplicate scans

If a page jammed and got scanned twice, you'll see two identical thumbnails. Click the X on the duplicate before merging. If you only spot it after the merge, delete the page from the combined file.

Set up scan-to-multipage next time

While you're solving this for today, change your scanner default to 'multi-page PDF' or 'document mode' for next time. Most modern scanners hide it under 'document feeder settings' or 'PDF settings'. Future you will be glad.

FAQ

What if the filenames aren't in scan order?

Drop them in, then drag thumbnails to reorder. Flint shows the first page of each so you can sequence by sight.

Can I OCR the merged file?

Flint's merge keeps your scans as-is. For searchable text, run OCR after merging via a tool that supports it, or convert to Word which OCRs in the process.

Why are my scans huge?

Scanners default to high-DPI colour. Compress the merged PDF and you'll typically shed 70%+ without visible quality loss.

Should I rotate before or after merging?

Either. Before is faster if 1-2 pages need it. After is faster if many need the same rotation — apply it to the range in one go.

Thirty files in, one tidy PDF out. Merge your scans in under a minute.
