Merging is the most boring PDF task and the highest-impact for client meetings.
Standard structure
Bank statements first, in chronological order. Investment statements next. Management accounts last. Each section is its own block within the annual PDF. Use merge PDF to combine in this order. Within each section, sort by date so the year reads forward, not backward.
Cover and index
Add a cover page with the client name, period, and a one-line note about purpose ("Year-end review pack"). Index page lists each section with starting page numbers. Build the index after merging so page numbers are accurate.
Reorder if needed
If a statement turns up out of sequence or a quarter's missing, reorder PDF pages to slot it into place. Don't re-merge from scratch every time — reorder is faster and you don't lose the index page.
Compress for distribution
Annual packs can balloon to 50MB+ if statements include charts and images. Compress PDF before emailing. For especially heavy packs, share via a secure link rather than email.

Should I include statements the client has already seen?
Yes — the value of the annual pack is having everything in one place. Repeating quarterly statements in the annual is the point.
What if statements have inconsistent formatting?
Don't try to normalise — leave each statement as the bank produced it. The pack is a record, not a redesign.
Can I add notes between sections?
Yes — drop a one-page note between sections explaining what's in the next block. It helps clients navigate.
Should the pack be password-protected?
For client distribution, yes — financial detail warrants protection. Password sent separately.
