You share a PDF with a counterparty for due diligence. The deal closes in two weeks. Three months later that link is still in their inbox, still works, still reveals your confidential numbers. Expiring links fix this.
How expiring links work
A share link is associated with a time window. Before the window closes, the link works as normal. After it closes, the link 404s or shows an expired message. The file remains in your storage; only access via that link stops.
Providers include Dropbox, Google Drive, Box, OneDrive, Tresorit, plus enterprise platforms. Each has its own expiry granularity — hours, days, weeks.
When to use them
Time-bounded engagements: due diligence, audits, short consultancies. Set expiry to engagement end + buffer.
Sensitive previews: pre-publication drafts shared for review. Expiry equals the review window.
Distribution where revocation matters: any document where you might later want to withdraw access.
Not useful for documents intended to be retained long-term by the recipient — there, you want them to keep their own copy.
Combine with encryption
Expiring link + password-protected PDF is defence in depth. If someone downloads during the window and the link later expires, the password still protects the downloaded copy.
Encrypt with Flint before uploading to your share platform. The platform handles the link; Flint handles the file.
FAQ
What happens to copies downloaded before expiry?
They remain with the downloader. Expiry stops new access; it doesn't reach into existing copies. Use watermarks and encryption for that risk.
Can I extend an expiring link?
Yes in most platforms — usually one-click. Don't extend forever; set a new expiry for the actual extended window.
Do recipients get warned before expiry?
Some platforms email a warning; others don't. Communicate the expiry to the recipient when you share.
Does Flint produce expiring links?
Flint focuses on the file itself. Pair Flint encryption with your file-share's link expiry for end-to-end protection.
Time-bounded access is one of the better tools against long-tail leaks. Encrypt in Flint, share with expiry through your platform.
