RTF (Rich Text Format) is Microsoft's older cross-platform format. Opens in every word processor on every operating system — Word, TextEdit, LibreOffice, Pages, even WordPad. When you need broad compatibility with some formatting, RTF is the answer.
What RTF gives you
Compared to plain text, RTF preserves: bold, italic, headings, font choices, colours, basic tables, images. Compared to DOCX, RTF is simpler, more universally supported, but missing modern features (no track changes formatting, limited table support, no embedded fonts).
Think of it as DOCX's older, more compatible cousin.
When to pick RTF
Cross-platform editing where the recipient might be on anything from a 2010 Mac to a fresh Windows install. Legacy systems that don't speak DOCX. Quick exports from older Macs (TextEdit's default save format).
For modern workflows, DOCX is almost always better. Reach for RTF when compatibility trumps features.
Conversion path
Flint's PDF to Word outputs DOCX by default. To get RTF, open the DOCX in Word and Save As > Rich Text Format. Most Mac users can do the same via Pages or TextEdit.

What survives the conversion
Body text, headings, basic tables, hyperlinks, images, lists — all carry across. Complex formatting (sidebars, columns, advanced typography) may simplify. RTF doesn't support every Word feature; if your PDF originated from a heavily formatted Word document, expect some loss.
