Someone sent a fillable PDF form. You'd like to edit the form itself — change a question, add a field, rename the headers — and you'd much rather do it in Word than fight Acrobat's form designer.
The conversion works. The form fields are a different story.
What converts and what doesn't
Text labels, instructions, section headings, layout: all carry across cleanly via PDF to Word.
Form fields themselves (text boxes, checkboxes, dropdowns, radio buttons): typically rendered as plain images or empty boxes. They become visual placeholders, not functional Word form controls.
That's because PDF form objects and Word form controls are different beasts under the hood — they don't translate directly.
Rebuild the form in Word
After converting, open the docx and turn on the Developer tab (File > Options > Customise Ribbon on Windows; Word > Preferences > Ribbon on Mac). You'll get a panel of Word form controls — text boxes, checkboxes, dropdowns — that you can drop into the document where the PDF fields used to be.
It's tedious for a 40-field form. Faster for short ones. If the form is complex and you fill it in often rather than edit it, just keep editing the PDF directly in Flint's PDF editor.
If filling, not editing, is the goal
People often convert forms to Word because they think filling them in Word will be easier. It rarely is — Word's form behaviour is fiddly, and the result needs converting back to PDF before sending. Skip the round-trip: fill the PDF directly or sign it if all you need is your signature on it.
Tables and signature fields
Signature fields convert as image placeholders. Date fields lose their date-picker behaviour. Calculated fields (formulas in the PDF) come across as static numbers. If those mattered, the round-trip lost them. Plan to recreate or use a form tool that supports them natively — for signatures, Flint's signing covers most cases without leaving PDF.

Will the checkboxes still work?
No. They appear as static squares. Replace them with Word's Developer-tab checkboxes if you need interactivity.
Can I edit the questions?
Yes — the text labels and instructions carry across as editable Word text. That's usually what people want.
Will validation rules survive?
No. PDF form validation (required fields, format checks) doesn't have a direct Word equivalent and isn't transferred.
Is there a better way to update a PDF form?
If you only need to tweak text, edit it in the PDF directly. Round-tripping through Word just to fix a typo creates more work than it saves.
